Comma sponsors Jolyon Palmer in GP2

07/03/2013

Comma has renewed its association with Jolyon Palmer as he continues to pursue his ambition to graduate to Formula 1. The Gravesend oil company supported the 22 year old son of former Formula 1 racer Jonathan Palmer during his early progression through the Formula Palmer Audi and FIA Formula Two championships between 2007 and 2010.

Addressing a GP2 international press conference at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya on March 6th, Comma Sales & Marketing Director Mike Bewsey announced that they will once again be sponsoring Jolyon when his Carlin Motorsport car rolls out in Comma livery for the first race of the GP2 season at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on March 23rd.

"I'm delighted that Jolyon will be re-joining forces and flying the flag for Comma once again in 2013," said Mike. "He did us proud when he represented us in the formative years of his single-seater career, and we couldn't be more pleased that the results he achieved then have helped to carry him to the threshold of Formula 1. His pre-season preparation and testing with our new technical partners, Carlin Motorsport, has gone really well, so I'm sure he's going to be on the front foot and right in the mix from the very start of the championship. We're all looking forward with great excitement to following his progress as the season unfolds."

Introduced in 2005, the GP2 Series is acknowledged as the final 'portal' to Formula 1. Most of the races take place on the same circuits on the same weekend as the F1 World Championship events. To contain costs, equalise the competition and place the emphasis on driver ability alone, the GP2 cars all use the same Dallara chassis, 4 litre 612bhp Renault V8 engine and Pirelli racing tyres. Former graduates to Formula 1 from GP2 include Lewis Hamilton & Nico Rosberg (Mercedes), Sergio Perez (McLaren), Pastor Maldonado (Williams) and Romain Grosjean (Lotus) among many others.
